I spent the day in bed but now I am up and about for a couple of hours to say 'hey' to out of town friends. The best part - we are meeting in a local park by the ocean.

Hidden Gem

Today I found an awesome hidden gem - The Scripps Coastal Reserve (aka The Knoll)! It is tucked away in a neighbourhood not too far from here. A short walk from this non-de-script entrance are some spectacular ocean vistas.

The entrance is hidden in a residential area with very very little street parking. You can bike in, but once you reach the reserve it is foot traffic only.

The surrounding neighbourhood is full of posh homes. The home pictured here (in the distance) has south facing jaw dropping views of LaJolla.

When I set out, I had not considered that the reserve is actually quite close to the glider port. But, my memory was prodded and I was super excited when I spotted the first paraglider in the distance.

When the gliders saw my camera and my obvious enthusiasm they put on a great show. There were lots of low passes right in front of me with smiles and waves!

Wave Riders

Time to start a new tradition.

Celebrate hump day by riding the waves.

Tonight was our second assembly of the Wednesday Wave Riding Club. As soon as the quitting whistle blew tonight ... we dashed to the beach. We had a blast crashing around in the ocean and riding the waves.

I was going to shoot some video of our antics - but my flip went for a swim without the waterproof case ... so no video 'til our next club meeting!

Dolphin Spotting

Tonight, I stopped at the beach on my way home from work. As usual I put one toe hesitantly into the water, shivered, pondered, and before I could retreat I was knocked over by a wave and then I was hooked - the next hour was spent bobbing around in the water and boogie boarding. While we were bobbing around out past the break, my friend kept insisting she saw dorsal fins in the distance. I scanned the horizon, but all I could see was kelp floating in the water. When we finally called it a night and were drying off on the beach -- the show began -- two dolphins swimming south and playing in the surf. The two of us stood mesmerized for quite a while enjoying our own private dolphin show!

Surf Diva

This weekend my friend Jac became a certified Surf Diva!

I grabbed my camera and parked myself at the beach during her lessons and acted as groupie, paparrazi and cheerleader. It is fun watching the look of determination as the grommets paddle for their first waves and are rudely tossed about by the chop. Ahhh, but there is nothing like that feeling of jubilation when you stand up and ride for the first time. Brought back great memories of my Surf Diva initiation.

If Jac is able to find a board and wetsuit -- by Saturday we will be bobbing up and down in the waves together.

Flashback To Friday

Friday I was pretty tired after the late night grunion adventures. But, not so tired that I couldn't celebrate some more! After work Myra and I went boogie boarding at Cardiff State beach. The water had cooled a little - but it was refreshing!
