Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent, is traditionally celebrated with merriment and great quantities of pancakes. In fact, in many places, including Canada, the day has come to be known as Pancake Day, or Pancake Tuesday.
Back in the day, strict Lenten rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products. Pancakes would be made to use up the supplies of eggs, milk, butter and other fats. The rich Shrovetide pancakes were eaten as a ritual or symbol of self-indulgence before the fast.

Can't believe I've come across a fellow pancake eater! My husband does the Lent thing so I get to enjoy Shrove Tuesday. We gorged on homemade pancakes oozing with melted butter, real maple syrup from a friend's maple lot, bananas & whipped cream. Yes, we suffered. Yes, major self-indulgence before we give up our daily tot of wine. Am enjoying your blog.
A gang of friends from work headed to the local IHOP with me. I split a banana, strawberry stack with maple syrup. I had a sugar buzz the rest of the day :-)
