Unicef Box

It is 9 pm and it is still over 70 degrees F tonight. It certainly doesn't feel like fall. Growing up, the week before Halloween we would be trying to figure out how cold it was going to be Halloween night. Would we need to wear ski pants and winter jackets under our costumes!?! Another Halloween tradition was those little orange cardboard Unicef boxes..

Things are a bit different now that I am in the land of perpetual summer and in a neighbourhood with very few kids that actually go door to door. So I am adding a new twist to the usual tradition.

Stimulus Cheque

Mr. Philip A. Belisle
United States Department of the Treasury
Internal Revenue Service
Kansas City, MO 64999-0025

Dear Sir:

On May 9, 2008, I received an “economic stimulus payment” from you for the amount of $600.00. I’m concerned that I received this check in error. As I understand it, you are $9 trillion in debt. You have outstanding bills with:

a) 47 million people in the United States without health insurance
b) 27 million Iraqis
c) 35.5 million Americans living without adequate food
d) 744,000 people in the U.S. without a place to live
e) 2.9 million disabled U.S. veterans
f) at least one polar bear

...

This is a snipit of a blog posting by Rose Marie Berger. Rose Marie is a Sojourners associate editor, is a Catholic peace activist and poet. She sent her stimulus cheque to charity.

Tunes For Fire Relief

In the fall of 2007, fires raged in Southern California. Particularly hard hit was San Diego County - where more than 500,000 people were forced to evacuate and approximately 1,500 homes were lost.

NBC 7/39 San Diego and Sounden Recordings have come together to release a San Diego Fire Relief CD, comprised of 18 different San Diego artists and bands.

Proceeds go to The San Diego Foundation’s After-The-Fires Fund 2007 and to the Fireman’s Fund.
